Some sites are available for reservations while others are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each unit has a parking spur, lantern post, fire grill and picnic table, and most sites are secluded from other sites. Bathhouses with toilets, warm showers, sinks, and drinking water are provided. Four walk-in tent group sites and 4 paved RV group sites are available in Group Loop for reservation. Recreation vehicles up to 40 feet can be accommodated in some units. Picnic area and group picnic shelter is available at beach area. A dump station (no water) is located on the left side of the road before the contact station as you enter the campground.

Natural Features

The campground is located in diverse vegetation, and Beartree Lake is surrounded by dense trees that meet the shoreline. The Mount Rogers Scenic Byway passes near the campground, highlighting the impressive valleys, mountains, forests and rural countrysides of western Virginia.

Recreation

The campground offers a 14-acre lake with two fishing piers. Smallmouth bass, sunfish, rainbow and brown trout are all possible catches. Self-propelled or electric trolling-motor boats only. State fishing and boating regulations and licensing requirements apply. The Beartree Lake Trail, which circles the lake, is excellent for hiking. Half of the trail is paved for an easier walk.

Nearby Attractions

Common questions

Is Beartree available right now?

Kestrel's most recent scan found openings on 11 of the next 14 days, starting Thu, Jul 30. Availability changes constantly — check the calendar above, then confirm on Recreation.gov.

How do I book Beartree?

Reservations are handled by Recreation.gov, not by Kestrel. Use the official reservation link on this page to book. Kestrel only watches availability and tells you when a site frees up.

How quickly will I hear about a cancellation?

Kestrel rescans every two minutes, and every 30 seconds during the provider's daily release window. Alerts go out by email as soon as a matching site appears.
